The Downey family papers and much more information about Laramie and Wyoming during the years that Stephen Downey was such an important part of local and state politics may be viewed on request in the reading room at the American Heritage Center in Laramie.
The center houses much information about Wyoming’s cattle business heritage. Interested parties may visit the Owen Wister Research Room, which is open to the public, for further inquiry. The collection includes the journals of Wister's trips west. It also has a virtual exhibit on The Virginian. Of special interest is the center’s Wyoming Stock Growers Association collection.
Archives hold a number important collections connected to Wyoming’s sheep industry, including papers and records of the Wyoming Wool Growers Association, the National Wool Growers Association, the American Sheep Industry Association, the Suffolk Sheep Association and many Wyoming sheep ranches and sheep businesses.
Billy Owen’s handwritten autobiography, and a typewritten copy, are part of an extensive collection of his papers and may be examined in the reading room on request. The collection is full of photographs as well as letters, and newspaper and magazine clippings important to Billy.
