Salt Creek Oil Field

The Salt Creek Oil Field around the town of Midwest, Wyo., about 40 miles north of Casper, is still producing oil today and was at one time the largest producing oil field in the world.

The Tour Guide to the Salt Creek field prepared for the Natrona County Commission, gives a concise history of the field and details a 16-stop tour. A person traveling alone can complete the tour comfortably in three or four hours. A larger group would take longer.

Also useful is a brochure, "Follow the Black Gold Byway," published by the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office, a guide with historical information and maps directing drivers to historical markers in Casper, Midwest and Edgerton, Wyo. that deal with the Salt Creek Field and the early oil booms.
