July – October 1851: John Wesley Jones created around 1,500 daguerreotypes in California and along the Oregon Trail to St. Louis. Jones used the images along with sketches from artists like William Quesenbury to create a panorama painting called the “Great Pantoscope of California, The Rocky Mountains, Salt Lake City, Nebraska & Kansas.”
